About Me

My photo

Life is beautiful whether you're soaking in sunshine or caught in a thunderstorm. I take the beauty of life for granted too often. I have a supportive husband who I don't want to live life without, a beautiful son who is always reminding me of the simple things that really matter, and an independent daughter who is teaching me to throw schedules out the window and live in the moment. My day is made when free samples fill my mailbox. I love discovering a new product and sharing it with others. I hope you will enjoy reading my posts and will share your stories with me as well.

Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend Book Review

Do you have trouble putting up boundaries in your life?  Are you saying yes to people and secretly hating your inability to tell them no?  Do you feel pressured to have a friendship with someone even though they are using you?  Is there a family member that just causes so much drama in your life but you can't turn away from them because you feel guilty?

I have been in all those situations and am still dealing with a couple of them.  Boundaries was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so glad she told me about it.  It's probably been my most favorite book I've ever read.

Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend do a phenomenal job pointing out biblically based answers to these tough questions and how to deal with the energy sucking relationships we have in our life.  They show us how to set up healthy boundaries with our parents, spouses, children, friends, coworkers, and even ourselves.  This book will help define who you are and who you are not and how to take control of your life.

Some of my favorite excerpts from this book are:

The Bible is full of examples of God asking people to "leave behind" the people and lives that are not good for them.  He asked the Israelites to leave Egypt to have a better life, but many of them kept looking back, holding on to what they thought was better.  We tend to hold on to the hope that "someday they will love me" and continue to get someone who is unable to love us to change.  This wish must be mourned and let go so that our hearts can be opened to the new things that God wants for us.

Many people have a problem with determining the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation.  They fail to deal with external resistance because they feel that they have to give in to the other person again or they are not being forgiving.  Many people are afraid to forgive because they equate that with letting down their boundaries one more time and giving the other person the power to hurt them again.  The Bible is clear about two principles: (1)We always need to forgive, but (2) we don't always achieve reconciliation.

We do not open ourselves up to the other party until we have seen that they have truly owned their part of the problem.  So many times Scriptures talks about keeping boundaries with someone until they own what they have done and produces "fruit in keeping with repentance" (Matt. 3:8).  True repentance is much more than saying "I'm sorry"; it is changing direction.

Leaving SC to come to Maine has really allowed me to refocus on what type of boundaries I want to establish in my life.  I've learned my lesson from "friends" that used me, co-workers that took advantage of my inability to say no to an additional workload, and family members that can't form a healthy relationship because it has to be done their way.  This book showed me how to have an internal focus of confession and repentance, letting go of the guilt, and moving forward and taking a stand (I have actually said no to a person two times in the last month, which is huge step for me).  I'm excited to start establishing healthier friendships, stronger bonds with family members, and be a happier me!

Super Easy Homemade Garlic Knots

I'm pretty sure I'll never go back to buying store bought garlic bread again for our spaghetti dinners.  These homemade garlic knots were super easy to make and really yummy!

1 1/2 cups warm water
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon yeast
3 1/2 cups all-purpose or bread flour
1 teaspoon salt

Garlic Spread
1 stick butter
1 tablespoon fresh minced garlic
1 teaspoon parsley

Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast and let that rest for 5 minutes.  Add flour and salt and mix until dough is smooth.  Let rise for 10 minutes.  On a floured surface, roll the dough out about 1/2 inch thick.  Cut the dough into strips using a pizza cutter.  Take the strips, tie into knots and place on baking sheet.  Let knots rise for 10 minutes.  Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.  While the knots are baking, melt the butter and add the garlic and parsley.  As soon as the garlic knots come out of the oven, brush the tops with the butter garlic mixture.

Our Weekend Recap

We headed to the ocean on Friday night after supper.  It was only 40 degrees and the wind was bitter but it was still gorgeous.  What is it about the ocean that makes the heart happy?

On Saturday, we had a yard clean up day.  I have learned not to like pine trees because of the three inches of pine needles and hundreds of pine cones that are covering my yard.  And to think people down South pay for these pine needles to be spread as mulch in their flower beds.  We worked six hours on Saturday and only took a short break to eat sandwiches.  We barely made a dent in the yard.  The house sat empty for 2 years and the owner before that didn't do any type of yard work so you can only imagine that chaos the yard is in.

Sunday was pretty uneventful since our muscles were screaming at us.  We went to church, had lunch at church, came home and took naps.  Mike had a test on Sunday night and he's finished with school for one week before the next semester will start.

OxiClean White Revive Stain Remover Review

Not only is this OxiClean White Revive awesome at removing stains, it smells fabulous! Seriously.  My laundry smells amazing!  I love the fact that stain remover is chlorine free so there is no heavy bleach smell in your clothes.  And even better, this stuff is safe on colors.  Yep!  No more worrying about bleach spots in my colored loads.

Here's a picture of Bradley's sock before.
My son has some pretty nasty socks by the end of the day.

And here's a picture of the socks after they were washed in OxiClean White Revive.  They aren't perfect but I didn't take the time to pre-soak the socks.  Who has time for pre-soaking anyway?  I'm still happy with the results.

Thanks to Smiley 360 for providing this product free in exchange for a review. All opinions expressed here are my own.

The Latest and Greatest in Bradley's World

Ahhh, my dear Bradley.  I have less than 2 more months of you being a toddler.  I can't believe I'm going to have a preschooler in June!  You are a social butterfly and are always making new friends wherever you go.  You love to draw and your art drawings are all over the house.  You get very upset if any of them happen to "fall" into the garbage.  Your fireman rain boots are pretty much the only shoes you wear right now.  You have become a chocoholic with only eating pancakes, waffles, or muffins with chocolate chips in them.  Your snack of choice is always yogurt or cottage cheese.  Your favorite thing to say is "hihowaahya" in a Maine voice.

You love to see how close you can get to the water without the waves touching your feet.

Your outfits are starting to become quite interesting.

Grocery shopping has become boring to you and you are now too big to sit in the front seat of the cart.  This makes Mama so sad!

Your favorite thing to do in the sand is DIG!

This just makes me smile...you have the cutest crack in town!

The rocky beach is your favorite beach and you love hunting for sea glass.

You love walking into town.

You will randomly say you have a fever and you need to go to the doctor.
I'm not sure why you love going to the doctor so much unless it's because of the really cool table at just your height.

You have no idea how lucky you are to have this sandy beach as your playground!

You still take naps and love all your "gankies".

We tell everyone we bought this house just for you to have a tire swing.
It's your favorite!

You are constantly asking for a tree house.

A true Mainer drinks Moxie and you actually like the drink.

Curvy slides make you nervous but you love the straight slides.

Another sign of a true Mainer....you can tear up a Whoopie Pie!

Our Weekend Recap

I really think I should open up a Bed & Breakfast here at the house.  I love having family and/or friends here on the weekends!  This past weekend, Mike's sister and her family came up from Connecticut.  The rain held off for most of the weekend and we had some fabulous sunshine and warm (50 degrees) weather!  We did a lot of sightseeing, introduced the kids to geocaching, found a new local coffee & pastry shop, experienced our first seafood restaurant in Maine, and found a new lighthouse.  And I met Crystal Paine from Money Saving Mom.  Her family was visiting Maine and I just happened to run into her and her family at the Portland Head Light.  It was pretty cool to meet a famous blogger!

There's nothing like camping out on the floor with cousins!

Everyone has to experience feeding the seagulls while in Portland.

This picture was taken seconds before a huge wave came up and splashed them!

Uncle Mike with his oldest niece and nephew

Where there's a hill, there will be rollers.

The rocks at Two Lights State Park are the best for watching the crashing waves.

I could have stayed here all day!  Great rocks for climbing with unbelievable views.

Reagan's strength is pretty impressive!

My sister-in-law Tina, me, and their adorable puppy, Ginger!

The kids were great at finding geocaches!

Bonadies family picture at the Portland Head Light

Sharing donuts from The Cookie Jar.  They seriously have the biggest and best donuts I've ever tasted!  And I can't believe my niece is now taller than me!!

We ate at Ken's Seafood on Saturday night.  I'm not a huge seafood fan but their ice cream is super delicious.  Because everyone goes to a seafood restaurant for their ice cream, right?!

Waiting so patiently for pizza at Woody's Brick Oven Pizza in York, Maine.

Humongous and delicious pizza!

Our first time at Nubble Lighthouse

Genovese family picture time!

There were some pretty great climbing rocks there too.

And we found another geocache!

These two loved the tire swing!

I'm so thankful for lots of gorgeous sunshine this weekend!

You know you've walked a whole lot, all day long when you take your boots off and your socks look like this!

Thanks Chuck, Tina, Reagan, Rocco, and Reese for the really fun weekend!  Start the countdown for your June visit!!
